New Charity Book for Autism

“Drawing Autism” Book Description: Although autism was first identified in 1943, the last decade has seen the complex neurobiological disorder become a topic of conversation the world over. Knowing no racial, ethnic or social barriers, today autism is diagnosed in 1 in every 150 children, with boys four times more likely to be autistic than girls. Known as a spectrum disorder, autism manifests differently in every diagnosis. From social deficits to behavioral difficulties and language delays, the severity of autism varies greatly from person to person. The unique nature of how autism affects individuals in myriad ways makes the disorder a challenge for those who have it, have children with it or work with those living with the diagnosis. Art has long been an outlet used by some individuals with autism to express themselves in instances where words do not work, or cannot be made to. Lost - Michael Buble

My son has been playing this on the ipod all day ... I can't believe it's over I watched the whole thing fall And I never saw the writing that was on the wall If I'd only knew The days were slipping past That the good things never last That you were crying Summer turned to winter And the snow it turned to rain And the rain turned into tears upon your face I hardly recognized the girl you are today And, God, I hope it's not too late Hmmm... It's not too late 'Cause you are not alone I'm always there with you And we'll get lost together 'Til the light comes pouring through 'Cause when you feel like you're done And the darkness has won Babe, you're not lost When your world's crashing down And you can't bear the thought I said, babe, you're not lost Life can show no mercy It can tear your soul apart It can make you feel like you've gone crazy But you're not Things have seemed to change There's one thing that's still the same In my heart you have remained And we can fly fly fly away 'Cause you are not alone And I am there with you And we'll get lost together 'Til the light comes pouring through 'Cause when you feel like you're done And the darkness has won Babe, you're not lost When the world's crashing down And you can not bear the cross I said, baby, you're not lost I said, baby, you're not lost I said, baby, you're not lost I said, baby, you're not lost

Life of an Art Therapist

What does an art therapist do? Art therapy gives people an opportunity to explore their deep or painful thoughts in a supportive environment. It involves using a wide variety of art materials to create a visual language of thought and feelings. I work in an adult mental health unit in an NHS hospital and at a school for blind children. People are referred to my sessions by their doctors, occupational therapists or teachers because they are distressed, have behavioural problems, have difficulties with relationships or perhaps have gone through a trauma. How do you help them? Initially, I have to assess them to gauge whether art therapy might help them communicate or work through their problems. I also assess whether they might be better having individual sessions or coming to a group. They then come to me for six weeks, where I offer them guidance and support to explore issues or concerns. They do drawing, painting or claywork in a safe, therapeutic atmosphere away from the wards or classroom. What is a typical day of an art therapist? At the hospital in the morning, I run an open group that gives people the freedom to stay as long as they feel they can. The second session, in the afternoon, is more structured and is for patients who can communicate more easily and discuss their problems in more depth. After each session, I give myself time to reflect and then make notes. I also spend a day in the community, running sessions for patients who have been discharged. What happens in an art therapy session? I prepare materials, like paints, paper or clay, before the class starts. I do not tell people what to draw or paint, but I will talk to them individually as they are working and I might spot links which identify with their difficulties in their pieces of artwork. Many come from traumatic backgrounds and it can help them to realise that others have shared those experiences. Who do you art therapists work with? At the school, there is a team of therapists – so there's a lot of support. At the hospital, I work with the occupational therapists and another art therapist. I also talk to nurses, doctors and psychologists.

pasteboard etched out with a knife to create the image is the first step. i've darkened it a little in photoshop so that you can see the cuttings in the pasteboard. shellack is then brushed over the top and left to dry for about 24 hours ... then ink up with etching ink ... wipe back and then put through the press ... then hopefully a good result (with no little fingerprints around the edges)

What is Art Therapy

Lots of you have been asking what art therapy is ... here we go ... “Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of communication. It is practised by qualified, registered Art Therapists who work with children, young people, adults and the elderly.[2] Clients who can use art therapy may have a wide range of difficulties, disabilities or diagnoses. These include, for example, emotional, behavioral or mental health problems, learning or physical disabilities, life-limiting conditions, brain-injury or neurological conditions and physical illness. Art therapy may be provided for groups, or for individuals, depending on clients’ needs. It is not a recreational activity or an art lesson, although the sessions can be enjoyable. Clients do not need to have any previous experience or expertise in art.”
